CAMPUS SPOTLIGHT PAGES

Tasked with creating campus spotlight pages that would be used as selling points for large benefactors, this project tested my skills as a designer, communicator, and technical writer. My internship was housed in the Mission Development department of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), which was solely dedicated to raising money and sustaining the nonprofit by building and maintaining relationships with large benefactors.

The main goals of the campus spotlight pages were to:

  • Maintain FOCUS branding

  • Demonstrate success of FOCUS on college campuses

  • Personalize each campus spotlight, making them unique to the campus and, consequently, the benefactor

Many benefactors have an interest in one or more specific campuses. The campus could be their alma mater, the university their daughter attends, or a campus in their current place of residence. Therefore, the campus spotlight pages needed to be unique to each university where FOCUS was present. This required diligent and persistent communication with team directors across the country and across the world. I needed to acquire newsletters, so I could extract photos and quotes to be used in each of the spotlights. Since many team directors were in different time zones and the rest were at training, it was difficult to get in touch. I sent countless emails following up, and I had to ensure that I was always asking the right questions the first time, just in case I would not be able to contact them again.

I was given full control of the design of the campus spotlight pages; my only limitation was that it needed to be consistent with the rest of FOCUS’s branding. The campus spotlight pages also needed to include four specific pieces of information:

  • Bible studies

  • Students in discipleship

  • Attendees at SEEK, FOCUS’s national conference

  • Quote from a student or missionary

This project greatly challenged my design skills, as there have been few times in my educational and professional career when I’ve been given total freedom with the design of a document. By the end of my time with FOCUS, I created 41 spotlight pages and left a template for my team to be used for future spotlight pages.
